Adonkia is just outside of the capital Freetown. During the civil war thousands of people fled the violence, often with no means to return to their homes. Groups of stone miners now live in zinc-walled homes overlooking coastal Adonkia. Many of the adults and children break stones extracted from the hills to earn a living which is meager even by local standards. The stones are broken into gravel and sold for use in cement. Gravel mining is a hopeless existence with no prospects for improvement, it is also dangerous.
Our goal is to help children in excessive poverty, by supporting them in their educational endeavors. If we educate the children they may become doctors, nurses, lawyers, engineers, educators or many other careers that could benefit their families and their country.
Due to the many challenges maintaining public institutions in Sierra Leone, many schools cannot function or pay teachers without charging students to keep the school running. The families of Adonkia struggle to pay these fees, so many of the children do not attend school.
Money goes far in Sierra Leone. Even modest contributions can make a difference. It can help build and maintain our library, provide tuition and fees for primary and secondary school and college tuition. Every and any size donation would be greatly appreciated and can make a huge difference in the life and well-being of the children and communities in Sierra Leone.
